Over 1 million strike in France against raising retirement age to 64, more years for full pension
French President Emmanuel Macron said the reforms are necessary to keep the pension system afloat.
More than 1 million people participated in strikes in France against proposed pension reform plans that would increase the legal retirement age and require more years of work in order to receive a full pension.
Protesters disrupted public transportation and many schools closed across France on Tuesday after months of demonstrations against the proposed reforms, according to Foreign Policy magazine.
Currently, every French worker can retire at 62 with a full-rate pension. The new plan would raise the retirement age to 64 by 2030 and require people to retire at 67 or have worked for 43 years before receiving their full pension, according to Euronews.
French President Emmanuel Macron appears committed to the plan, which he has said is necessary to keep the pension system afloat.
