Trump threatens 200% tariffs on wines, champagnes from France, other European Union countries
Trump said that this decision would be great for wine and champagne businesses located in the U.S.
President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to place a 200% tariff on wines and champagne coming from France and other European Union countries.
This action is in response to the European Union putting a 50% tariff on whisky in the U.S., Trump said in a social media post announing his threat.
"The European Union, one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the World, which was formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States, has just put a nasty 50% Tariff on Whisky," Trump wrote on TRUTH Social.
"If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES," the post continued.

The threat comes one day after the EU retaliated against Trump's 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum by saying it would impose counter tariffs of 26 billion euros ($28.33 billion) worth of U.S. goods that would go into effect in April – and amid a wave imposed tariffs and tariff threats impose on Canada, China and Mexico.
