US blocks UN security council resolution calling for ceasefire in Gaza
The Security Council has only approved four resolutions regarding the war since it began. Hamas still holds 58 hostages, of which only one third are believed to be alive.
The United States on Wednesday executed its veto power to block a United Nations (UN) resolution that demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, because it did not include the release of hostages.
The veto comes after the U.S. blocked a similar resolution in November under the previous administration for the same reason. All 14 other members of the UN's Security Council voted in favor of the resolution on Wednesday.
The U.S. claimed the resolution also did not meet two of its other demands, including condemning Hamas for the war with Israel, which it started on Oct. 7, 2023. The other demand it excluded was that Hamas must disarm and withdraw from Gaza, per the Associated Press.
The resolution did describe the situation in Gaza as "catastrophic," and directed Israel to lift its restrictions on distributing aid to Palestinians in the region.
