Pentagon probes leaked classified docs on Ukraine war, amid info is in fact Russia disinformation
Military analysts told the New York Times that the documents were likely modified from the original format
A senior Ukrainian official said Friday that leaked documents about NATO's plans to help his country thwart Russia's invasion of his country could be "disinformation," the day after the Pentagon began investigating the matter.
That documents by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the international military alliance, were leaked on social media, including Twitter and Telegram, and that the Pentagon was investigating the matter was first reported Thursday by The New York Times, based on information from a senior Biden administration official.
The documents are reportedly related to NATO plans to supply aid to Ukrainian ahead of its expected upcoming offensive and are five weeks old.
Military analysts tell the Times the documents were likely modified from the original format, which understates the casualties on the Russian side and overstates the casualties on the Ukrainian side.
Biden officials also said that they have been attempting to get some of the leaked information that has since been deleted from social media.
"We are aware of the reports of social media posts, and the [Defense] Department is reviewing the matter,” Sabrina Singh, the deputy press secretary at the Pentagon told the newspaper.
