Attorney General Pam Bondi is set to announce plans to reopen Alcatraz as a federal prison on Thursday, as Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., calls it President Trump's "stupidest initiative yet."

Bondi and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum are expected to officially announce the Trump administration's plans to reopen Alcatraz as a federal prison, which is currently controlled by the National Park Service and generates about $60 million in annual revenue, KGO reported.

A bill is expected to be introduced in the House of Representatives to pave the way for Alcatraz to reopen by ending environmental protections for the site and rescinding the National Park Service's control of it.

Pelosi said in a statement that reopening Alcatraz is "the Trump Administration's stupidest initiative yet."

"It should concern us all that clearly the only intellectual resources the Administration has drawn upon for this foolish notion are decades-old fictional Hollywood movies," the former House speaker added.

Trump first proposed the reopening in May and recently talked about renderings of a new facility.

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office said in a statement, "Pam Bondi will reopen Alcatraz the same day Trump lets her release the Epstein files. So... never."

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie (D) also said in a statement, "There's no realistic plan to make Alcatraz reopen as anything other than the wonderful tourist attraction that it currently is."

The cost of refurbishing the island and building a new prison would be at least $250 million, according to estimates.
