Florida GOP Rep Mills faces eviction from DC penthouse over unpaid rent, blames system glitch
"Here's just the past two months where you can see I'm repeatedly asking for payment links and again as I tried with management today, it failed to process," Rep. Cory Mills said
Florida GOP Rep. Cory Mills is facing eviction from his Washington, D.C., penthouse over unpaid rent, blaming a system glitch for the delinquency.
Bozzuto Management Company, which owns the complex in which Mills rents a $20,000-per-month penthouse, filed an eviction lawsuit against the congressman this month in D.C. Superior Court, WUSA reported. The company claims that Mills has not paid rent since March, resulting in about $85,000 in past due amounts.
Mills earns roughly $174,000 a year as a congressman. The lawsuit includes a payment ledger going back to 2023, showing multiple late payments since he first signed the lease after taking office. The company began taking steps to terminate his lease back in January.
Mills, in response, has said a glitch in the online payment system.
Responding to a Daily Beast reporter on X about the eviction, Mills posted, "I know facts are unusual and unfamiliar thing for you, but here’s just the past two months where you can see I’m repeatedly asking for payment links and again as I tried with management today, it failed to process.
"'Error code 108 typically indicates an issue with the Windows Installer Service, often meaning another installation is already running. It can also be related to bank connectivity problems in financial software.'"
Mills included screenshots in the post of error messages when he attempted to pay the rent, along with emails in which he requested updated payment links from management.
The lawsuit was first reported Monday by journalist Roger Sollenberger.
Just the News left a message on Mills' congressional office phone Wednesday morning requesting additional comment.
