Former Wyoming GOP Sen. Alan Simpson died early Friday morning at age 93.
He was struggling to recover after breaking his hip in December, his family said in a statement to The Associated Press.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
Simpson is considered a moderate who served in the Senate from 1979 to 1997. He supported abortion rights and was pro same-sex marriage.
He often voted with the GOP on immigration issues and foreign policy.
