GOP-House passes bill to end DC's 'sanctuary' city statutes
The measure passed 224-194, with 11 Democrats voting with Republicans to pass the measure
The Republican-controlled House on Thursday night passed legislation requiring Washington, D.C., to comply with federal immigration laws and end its status as a so-called sanctuary city.
The bill, if passed in the GOP-led Senate and signed into law, would block D.C. policies that restrict it from sharing immigration status information with the Department of Homeland Security and prevent it from complying with Immigration and Customs Enforcement requests to detain people until ICE officers can take them into custody.
The measure passed 224-194, with 11 Democrats voting with Republicans to pass the measure, according to the news outlet Roll Call.
House Speaker Mike Johnson referred to the recent protests in cities across the country over ICE agents' recent mass arrest in Los Angeles of suspected illegal migrants in announcing the bill's passage.
“The inexcusable violence in Los Angeles is the latest example of what happens when cities put left-wing political agendas ahead of public safety," the Louisiana Republican said. "For years, D.C. leaders have followed the lead of sanctuary states like California and New York, choosing to shield illegal aliens from federal law instead of protecting American citizens."
