GOP House leaders cancel votes for rest of week after internal revolt over new-mom proxy vote
The news comes after a group of nine Republicans joined House Democrats in opposing a procedural rule that would have blocked the House from voting on allowing proxy voting for new parents.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer on Tuesday informed the lower chamber that there will be no more votes on the House floor until next Monday, effectively canceling all planned votes for the remainder of the week.
The news comes after a group of nine Republicans joined House Democrats in opposing a procedural rule that would have blocked the House from voting on allowing proxy voting for new parents.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said that the group of Republicans' bringing down the procedural rule meant that no further action could take place on the House floor this week, including votes on the SAVE Act.
"Let me just make clear, that rule being brought down means that we can't have further action on the floor this week," Johnson told reporters. "That means we cannot vote on the SAVE act for election integrity, we will not be voting on the rogue judges who are attacking President [Donald] Trump's agenda ... All of that was just wiped off the table. It's very unfortunate."
