House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan on Wednesday sent a subpoena to former special counsel Jack Smith, demanding that he sit for a closed-door deposition with the committee.

In 2022, then-Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith to handle the investigation into President Donald Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents. His probe expanded to include Trump's 2020 election challenges and drew accusations of political motivations.

Smith previously suggested he was open to answering questions publicly, Politico reported. His attorney, however, expressed disappointment that the panel would not permit the deposition to be public.

“Nearly six weeks ago Jack offered to voluntarily appear before the House Judiciary committee in an open hearing to answer any questions lawmakers have about his investigation into President Trump’s alleged efforts to unlawfully overturn the election results and retention of classified documents,” Attorney Peter Koski told the outlet. “We are disappointed that offer was rejected, and that the American people will be denied the opportunity to hear directly from Jack on these topics.”
