House Speaker predicts chamber will vote on Trump budget before Friday
Johnson has been negotiating with GOP holdouts over the past week, but said recent progress could put the House on track to pass a rule governing the bill on Wednesday and a final vote no later than Thursday.
House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters on Tuesday evening that he believes House leaders will get the One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed before Friday, after Republican leaders offered a last-minute deal to party holdouts. The budget bill also includes much of President Donald Trump's domestic agenda.
Several House Republicans have refused to pass the massive legislation over a SALT deduction cap, which is a tax break that allows taxpayers to deduct part or all of what they paid in state and local taxes from their federal tax returns.
Johnson has been negotiating with the holdouts over the past week, but said recent progress from the offer could put the House on track to pass a rule governing the bill on Wednesday and a final vote no later than Thursday, according to The Hill.
The holdouts, which includes New York GOP Rep. Mike Lawler, appear open to the offer if the math adds up okay.
“We’re still finalizing things, but it’s not going to be a heavy lift,” Johnson said.
The progress also comes after President Trump visited Capitol Hill on Tuesday, to help Johnson unite the moderates and conservatives in his conference enough to pass the bill.
