Johnson says House GOP leaders will meet on extending funding deadline beyond Nov 21
Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune have both commented on extending the funding date, though neither indicated what the new deadline would be.
House Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday told reporters that he will meet with other congressional Republican leaders to discuss extending the funding deadline under its current continuing resolution beyond the Nov. 21 deadline.
The discussion comes after the Senate failed 13 times last month to pass the House's resolution, and as the shutdown passes the one-month mark. The government officially closed down on Oct. 1 after Senate Democrats blocked the House's resolution.
Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune have both commented on extending the funding date, though neither indicated what the new deadline would be.
“We’re very mindful of the calendar. We’re very frustrated by that,” Johnson said during a press conference. “It’s part of the reason we’re so angry about this, because they’re eating up the clock, and the Democrats know how much more we have to do here this year. Our leaders will go and meet on the calendar."
Thune said that the Senate will need to pass a longer-term continuing resolution now that Senate Democrats have burned too much time to pass the House version. However, the date change means that the resolution will go back to the House for approval.
Multiple sources told The Hill on Monday that a possible extension could last until January.
