Maryland Rep Ivey becomes 1st congressional Dem to call for Schumer to step down as Senate leader

Maryland Democrat Rep. Glenn Ivey on Tuesday night publicly suggested New York Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer step down as Senate majority leader, becoming the first congressional Democrat to do so.

“I respect Chuck Schumer," Ivey said during a town hall event. "I think he had a great, long-standing career, did a lot of great things, but I’m afraid that it may be time for the Senate Democrats to get a new leader."

Democrats are upset with Schumer for him last week reversing course and backing a GOP-crafted budget resolution to avoid a government shutdown.

About 800 people attended the event in Prince George's County, Md., and the crowd broke into applause after Ivey's comment, according to the Huffington Post.

Schumer has argued that shutting down the government would have been worse than voting in favor of the stop-gap sending measure.
