Massie teases legislation seeking to forbid US from entering a war with Iran
"This is not our war," Massie posted to X. "But if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our Constitution. I’m introducing a bipartisan War Powers Resolution tomorrow to prohibit our involvement. I invite all members of Congress to cosponsor this resolution."
Kentucky GOP Rep. Thomas Massie on Monday night announced he will introduce legislation on Tuesday that seeks to prevent the United States from entering a war with Iran, as the Middle Eastern country battles Israel.
The announcement comes as President Donald Trump heads back to Washington, D.C. from the G-7 summit in Canada a day early, amid increased tension between Israel and Iran. He is expected to meet with his National Security Council in the Situation Room upon his return.
Massie urged lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to support the legislation, which he characterizes as a "bipartisan War Powers resolution."
"This is not our war," Massie posted to X. "But if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our Constitution. I’m introducing a bipartisan War Powers Resolution tomorrow to prohibit our involvement. I invite all members of Congress to cosponsor this resolution."
Details on the resolution have not been released, but Democratic lawmakers have already signaled they will sign the resolution, including New York progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Michigan Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib.
"I look forward to supporting this War Powers Resolution," Tlaib posted to X. "The American people aren't falling for it again. We were lied to about "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq that killed millions + forever changed lives. It's unconst'l for Trump to go to war without a vote in Congress."
The Trump administration has denied reports that it is looking to go to war with Iran. The Pentagon on Monday claimed that the U.S. is maintaining its "defensive posture" in the region.
