Over a dozen Democratic lawmakers join rally in support of transgender rights on National Mall
Democratic California Rep. Sara Jacobs reintroduced her legislation on Monday to formally recognize March 31 as "Trans Day of Visibility."
Dozens of Democratic lawmakers made appearances on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Monday, at a major transgender rights rally, part of the national Trans Day of Visibility.
The day of visibility was officially recognized by the Biden administration in 2021, but the rally this year comes after President Donald Trump's gender-related executive orders, such as orders that block transgender people from serving in the military and from competing in women's sports.
It is not clear how many Democratic lawmakers joined the rally, but Pennsylvania Democratic Rep. Summer Lee and Vermont Rep. Becca Balint were among those making appearances.
"When you make it harder for a child to be seen, loved, or treated with dignity, that’s not just a policy failure. It’s a moral failure," Lee posted on X. "To every trans kid, parent, and person who showed up to today’s #TransDayofVisibility rally, even when it was hard: I see you + I am with you."
Several bills aimed at supporting transgender people were also introduced on Monday, including Balint's resolution that would expand and protect access to gender-affirming care for transgender youths and adults, per The Hill.
Democratic California Rep. Sara Jacobs also reintroduced her legislation on Monday to formally recognize March 31 as "Trans Day of Visibility."
"It’s been a joy to watch my trans brother and gender non-conforming sibling live authentically and happily as themselves," Jacobs posted on X. "I will always fight for a world in which every trans person has that right."
The rally took place from 4-6 p.m. ET.
