US ambassador to Ukraine to resign after three years in post
Brink has not commented on reports of her impending resignation, but she has served in the role since May 2022.
The State Department on Thursday confirmed that U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink is expected to resign her post early, after three years on the job, which began just months after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The expected resignation comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized Brink over her wording in a statement about an attack on his hometown, according to The Hill.
Brink, who started working for the State Department in 1996, has not officially tendered her resignation but has started saying goodbye to colleagues, sources told CBS News.
“Ambassador Brink is stepping down," a State Department spokesperson told the outlets. "She’s been the ambassador there for three years — that’s a long time in a war zone. And frankly, the war has gone on for far too long. The real issue is whether the Russians and Ukrainians are ready to do what’s necessary to end this war.”
Brink has not commented on reports of her impending resignation, but she has served in the role since May 2022. She was initially planning to resign in January as part of the turnover to a new administration, but Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly declined to accept the resignation.
The resignation comes as the U.S. works to secure a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, which would end the years-long war. Ukraine has already accepted a ceasefire proposal from the U.S. but Russia has not agreed to it so far.
