New Jersey mayor charged with DUI after driving toddler home from daycare: reports
Lumberton Mayor Gina LaPlaca was also reportedly charged with child neglect and driving with an expired license.
A mayor in New Jersey has been charged with driving under the influence and endangering her toddler after nearly getting into a car crash on St. Patrick's Day.
Lumberton Mayor Gina LaPlaca, 45, was arrested Monday at her house.
The arrest came after she admitted to police that she was drinking right before picking up her 2-year old son from daycare, according to local news reports.
Video footage taken by an eye witness appears to show LaPlaca driving her car and appearing to swerve across lanes and almost hit a utility pole with her son in the rear car seat.
She was also reportedly charged with child neglect and driving with an expired driver's license.
LaPlaca's husband, Jason Carty, posted on Facebook that his wife was getting help for her addiction.
“Millions of Americans struggle with addiction and never get help. Gina LaPlaca is someone who has struggled, and is now getting the help she needs,” Carty wrote.
