Former CIA Director John Brennan on Wednesday made his first public comments since the FBI reportedly opened an investigation into him, stating he had not been notified of the investigation before he read about it in the press.

News of the investigation emerged on Tuesday, which has since been confirmed to Just The News, but details on the investigation and alleged misconduct were not immediately clear. However, it comes after the CIA conducted a review that critiqued the actions taken by Brennan related to the Russiagate scandal.

Brennan told MSNBC that he had not been notified of an investigation by the FBI or the Justice Department, but was proud of the work that his CIA did on the investigation into the 2016 election.

"I know nothing about this reported investigation or referral to the DOJ, other than what I've read in these press reports. These leaks, which are not really supposed to happen if there is an investigation going on," he said. "Nobody from the FBI or Department of Justice or CIA has reached out to me at all, so I am just waiting to hear more about what this might be."

The former director also stood by his investigation into the scandal, stating his team tried to protect the integrity of the investigative process, and claimed that recent criticism was politically motivated.

"I think this is unfortunately a very sad and tragic example of the continued politicization of the intelligence community, [and] of the national security process," he said. "Quite frankly, I'm really shocked that, you know, individuals are willing to sacrifice their reputations, their credibility, their decency, to continue to do Donald Trump's bidding on something that clearly is just politically based."

The FBI is also allegedly investigating former FBI Director James Comey, but sources could not tell Fox News details of what specifically is being probed. However, two sources said the bureau views the interactions between Brennan and Comey as a possible "conspiracy."
