President Donald Trump on Monday announced that he would implement 100% tariffs on Russia if Moscow did not reach an agreement to end the war within 50 days.

"We are very, very unhappy with [Russia], and we're going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days," he said during a meeting with NATO chief Mark Rutte. "Tariffs at about 100%, you call them secondary tariffs."

Trump's remarks appear to suggest he meant that he would impose tariffs on other nations that do business with Russia, though it was not immediately clear.

The announcement comes as Trump grows increasingly frustrated with the Russians over their refusal to back down from core strategic demands to make a deal. Trump himself promised to end the war within 24 hours, though that deadline has long since passed.

At present, the Russian army is making considerable gains in eastern Ukraine, especially in northwestern Donbass.
