President Donald Trump confirmed Monday that at least five people have been arrested for allegedly vandalizing the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial in downtown Washington, D.C.

The Department of the Interior said at least 14 police reports have been filed for vandalism of the reflecting pool and five other people have been given federal citations, according to The Hill

"We had vandalism. It's not a lot of damage, but we'll probably have to let the water out and re-fix it," Trump told reporters at the White House. "They went in there with a knife. I was just told by the people over at Parks, five people are arrested, and five people are under investigation right now—and it's a sad thing."

The president blamed vandalism for the state of the newly redone pool outside the memorial, stating vandals had destroyed the grass outside the pool and hurt the inside surface of the pool.

Since the project was completed, algae growth has turned the pool green. National Park Service workers have used hydrogen peroxide to combat the growth alongside a new filtration system.
