Michigan AG charges 5 non-citizens with voting in 2024 elections

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Thursday charged five non-citizens with illegally voting in the 2024 elections in the Wolverine State.

"In my office, we’ve always taken election crimes seriously, and prosecute attacks on our voting systems to the fullest extent of the law," she said in a statement. "We’re upholding election integrity by investigating all claims of non-citizen voters, as rare as they are, and holding bad actors accountable when they refuse to abide by the laws that keep our elections safe and secure."

"These charges reflect the severity of the allegations, the sanctity of our democracy, and the tremendous consequences of voting illegally— whether that’s done to try and “test” security measures or to make an unlawful vote count," Nessel added.

Those charged include the five non-citizens who allegedly voted and a U.S. citizen who allegedly registered her non-citizen spouse to vote, The Detroit News reported.

Michigan was one of the states at the center of President Donald Trump's claims that election fraud affected the outcome of the 2020 election.

Democrats, for their part, have insisted that non-citizen voting is statistically rare.
