Seattle police chief resigns amid pressure from mayor, criticism for shooting response

Seattle's police chief resigned on Thursday under pressure from Mayor Katie Wilson and criticism for the slow release of information following a fatal shooting at a food festival last weekend. 

Seattle police officers arrested a 15-year-old suspect Monday morning in connection to a deadly shooting that took place at a food festival near the city's Space Needle.

Three people were killed, and four others were wounded in Sunday night's shooting. One of the wounded was a 2-year-old boy, and police said they believed the incident began when two parties began shooting at each other.

Wilson announced that Police Chief Shon Barnes would step down. He was out of town at the time of the incident. After an initial social media post announcing the shooting, it was another five hours for police to release further information, the Associated Press reported. The city also didn't utilize its emergency alert system to send out notifications. 

Wilson said in a video statement on Thursday that she wasn't aware of how little information had reached the public or the press since the incident in the hours after the incident, and had she known, she said she would have "pushed for an immediate briefing."
