Trump claims rise in socialist candidates is 'biggest threat to our nation'
“I think it’s the biggest threat to our nation there is, maybe since our founding," Trump said. "That includes World War I, World War II, September 11, it includes the Pearl Harbor attack.”
President Donald Trump said Monday that he believes the rise in socialist candidates and their popularity in places like New York pose the "biggest threat to our nation."
The comment comes after New York City's socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani scored a slew of victories last week when a string of his candidates won their respective primaries for congressional districts, even beating out two incumbents.
“They use the word social democrat because it sounds so nice, but it’s really communism you’re talking about,” Trump told reporters. “I think it’s the biggest threat to our nation there is, maybe since our founding. That includes World War I, World War II, September 11, it includes the Pearl Harbor attack.”
Trump has warned that the socialist candidates are actually communists and that communism is "very easy to sell" because it gives people things for "free." For example, a New York City housing board recently voted to freeze rent for approximately one million rent-controlled apartments for tenants with one-year or two-year leases for a period of two years.
The comment also comes after democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George won the Democratic nomination for D.C. mayor earlier this month. Trump has blasted the nominee as a “communist” and said he will push back against her policies.
