According to a recent poll, 54% of voters believe that President Donald Trump's crackdown on crime in Washington, D.C., is both justified and necessary.

On Monday, Harvard CAPS/Harris released a poll that found 54% of voters approved of Trump's actions regarding crime in the capital. Just 28% of Democrats said that Trump's actions are justified and necessary, compared to 85% of Republicans and 47% of Independents.

Also, while 54% of voters support the Trump administration declaring a crime emergency in D.C. and deploying the National Guard, 53% oppose Trump's use of his presidential authority to take over local police.

The National Guard deployment is a signal that Trump will perform similar actions in other cities in the future, 73% of voters opined.

Typical large American cities are unsafe, 56% of voters said, with 63% specifying New York City and 62% for Los Angeles. A total of 55% of voters believe that the current level of crime in D.C. is about the same as other parts of the country.

A plurality of voters, 40%, said that crime in the U.S. is increasing.

Meanwhile, 54% of voters say that Trump’s actions regarding crime in D.C. are a distraction from other unpopular policies and personal problems.

The poll was released two weeks after Trump implemented federal control over the capital, deploying the National Guard, sending federal officers to assist local law enforcement, and taking over the Metropolitan Police Department.

The survey was conducted online within the U.S. on Aug. 20-21, among 2,025 registered voters by The Harris Poll and HarrisX.
