Republicans lose edge on inflation, economy: Poll

Republicans have seen their polling advantage on the economy and inflation disappear in the fallout from President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs, according to a recent survey.

While they maintained a narrow advantage on the economy generally, voters broke for the Democrats on inflation in the latest iteration of the Napolitan News Survey. Only 41% favored the GOP on the economy, compared to 40% who backed the Democrats. Only inflation, however, Democrats led with 42% support to the GOP's 38%.

Republicans previously held a 11-point and 10-point advantage on inflation and the economy, respectively. The development is somewhat surprising in light of inflation ticking down for March.

Republicans did maintain decisive edges on immigration and crime, however. On the former, 47% preferred the GOP while 35% favored the Democrats. On crime, 46% favored Republicans compared to 34% who favored the Democrats.

Conducted April 9-10, the survey questioned 1,000 registered voters and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1%.
