Trump cheers low border numbers in push for Texas redistricting

Democrats have attempted to initiate counter efforts in their own bastions, though constitutional limitations in New York have hindered that move and others may require elections.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday celebrated the collapse in border crossing figures, insisting that such a development was due to his leadership and encouraging Texas lawmakers to support his continued efforts by redrawing the state's congressional maps.

"CONGRATULATIONS TEXAS! The July Border Statistics are in and, once again, they are the LOWEST RECORDED NUMBERS IN UNITED STATES HISTORY," he posted on Truth Social. "The U.S. Border Patrol reported ZERO releases of Illegal Aliens into the Country. Texas’ Border is Safe and Secure, and the entire World knows it."

"All we need to do is keep it this way, which is exactly why Texas Republicans need to help us WIN the 2026 Midterm Elections, and pass their new Bill, AS IS, for the ONE BIG, BEAUTIFUL CONGRESSIONAL MAP!" he added. "With the Texas House now in Quorum, thanks to  GREAT Speaker Dustin Burrows, I call on all of my Republican friends in the Legislature to work as fast as they can to get THIS MAP to Governor Greg Abbott’s desk, ASAP. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

Trump included the planned map of Texas's new districts, which are expected to add as many as five GOP-leaning seats in time for the 2026 midterms. Indian, Ohio, and a handful of other Republican states are expected to follow suit.

Democrats have attempted to initiate counter efforts in their own bastions, though constitutional limitations in New York have hindered that move and others may require elections.

The current House is narrowly divided and even a small advantage could help the GOP retain control in defiance of historic trends punishing the incumbent party.
