French President Emmanuel Macron will make state visit to U.S. in December

French President Emmanuel Macron and first lady Brigitte Macron will pay a state visit to the United States in December.

U.S. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will host the pair at a state dinner on Dec. 1 first, according to the Washington Times. It will be the first state dinner they have hosted since becoming president. 

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said they "will discuss our continued close partnership on shared global challenges and areas of bilateral interest."

The visit comes amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and follows a diplomatic row between Washington and Paris over an American tech sharing agreement with the UK and Australia.

France recalled its ambassadors in protest of the AUKUS agreement as it reportedly undercut a submarine sales plan brokered between Paris and Canberra, the Times noted. France labelled the plan "a major breach of trust and contempt," but subsequently reinstated its ambassadors after a phone call between Macron and Biden.

Macron secured his reelection in April of this year after defeating right-wing opponent Marine Le Pen in a runoff for the second time. He first won office in 2017 as a political outsider, defeating Le Pen by a landslide margin.
