Spanish fighter jets on a NATO air police mission Thursday were activated to fly to Lithuania after two Russian military aircraft invaded its airspace.
The latest incursion comes after Russian drones invaded the airspaces of Denmark, Estonia, Norway and Poland last month. The four European countries are all part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
The Lithuanian Defense Ministry and Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said that the incursion, which happened at 6 p.m. local time, only lasted 18 seconds and that jets were scrambled to respond to the two jets, per Fox News.
"This is a blatant breach of international law and territorial integrity of Lithuania," Nausėda said. "Once again, it confirms the importance of strengthening European air defense readiness."
Russian diplomats in Lithuania have been called in to meet with the NATO country's foreign ministry on the matter.
