Poland's presidential election may be delayed amid coronavirus pandemic

As nations around the globe grapple with the coronavirus, Poland may delay its presidential election slated for May 10.

Legislation to allow the election to be fully by mail has not yet been approved and a final vote is expected on Thursday, according to the Associated Press. The outlet noted that Polish lawmakers in the opposition would like the election to be delayed as would some people in the ruling party.

“May 10 is a difficult date to meet,” Deputy Prime Minister Jacek Sasin said on Radio Zet. “If the law takes effect May 7, it will not be possible to get the voting procedure ready.”

The term of current Polish President Andrzej Duda ends Aug. 6.

There have been 698 coronavirus deaths and 14,006 confirmed cases in the European nation, according to Johns Hopkins University.
