Three young suspects were arrested in Belgium on Thursday for an alleged terror plot targeting Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever and other politicians.

Federal Belgian prosecutor Ann Fransen said the suspects were arrested in Antwerp, and two remain in custody. They are expected to appear before a judge.

“There are indications that the intention was to carry out a jihadist-inspired terrorist attack targeting politicians,” Fransen said during a press conference, per Politico. “This file shows that all security services must remain vigilant against the risk of terrorist attacks."

The names of the suspects have not been released, but they were born in 2001, 2002 and 2007.

Fransen's office said authorities are investigating alleged plans to use a drone to deploy a device that resembled an improvised explosive device.

Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot confirmed the plan was to target De Wever, stating it was "shocking," and affirmed that Belgium is working to improve its capabilities to combat terrorism.

"This event forcefully reminds us that the terrorist threat remains very real and that we must remain vigilant," he said. "Belgium is actively strengthening its capacities to address new forms of terrorism, notably through the fight against the malicious use of drones."

The latest incident comes as Belgian prosecutors have opened around 80 new terrorism cases so far this year, surpassing the total for 2024.
