Haiti officials arrest 'presumed assassins' of President Moïse

Haitian authorities Wednesday night said they arrested the "presumed assassins" of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse earlier in the day.

Haiti's Communications Secretary Frantz Exantus said the suspects were detained in Pelerin, a district within the upscale neighborhood of Petionville, a suburb of Port-au-Prince, the capital of the nation. Exantus did not say how many were arrested, according to the Associated Press.

Moïse along with his wife were attacked in an overnight raid on their home early Wednesday. His wife, Martine, was in stable but critical condition and has been moved to Miami for treatment.

Moïse ruled the country for two years by decree after the country failed to hold elections. Critics demanded in recent months that he resign. The country is now in the hands of Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph. Joseph confirmed the assassination, and called for an international investigation earlier in the day.
