Israeli strikes in Gaza kill 104 after Netanyahu accuses Hamas of breaking ceasefire
The United States was notified of the attack on the Gaza Strip before it took place.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday ordered the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) to conduct strikes in Gaza, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 104 people, after Israel accused Hamas of violating the U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
Gaza health officials reported the death toll and said that 253 people were also wounded, most of them women and children, The Associated Press reported. The officials said 46 children were included in the death toll.
Israel claimed Hamas violated the peace deal by not returning the bodies of some hostages and attacking Israeli forces, according to the New York Times. Hamas has denied involvement in the attack on Israeli forces and said it remained committed to the ceasefire.
The United States was notified of the attack on Gaza before it took place, the outlet reported.
The IDF said Wednesday that the ceasefire was back on in Gaza after it carried out the strikes.
The attack comes after the IDF accused United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon of shooting one of its drones down on Sunday that was part of an intelligence-gathering mission. It also comes after the peacekeepers accused the IDF twice of dropping grenades near its observers.
The IDF said both times it had attempted to disperse Hezbollah activity, and did not intend to harm the observers.
