The United States Capitol Police on Wednesday evening announced former acting Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan will serve as its new permanent chief.

Sullivan will replace interim Capitol Police Chief Sean Gallagher as the head of the department. The new leader comes after former Police Chief Thomas Manger retired last month.

The news comes after the Capitol Police union opposed Gallagher for the permanent spot due to his leadership role on January 6.

Sullivan previously worked as the deputy commissioner of compliance and deputy commissioner of operations for the Baltimore Police Department, and was the deputy chief at the Louisville Metro Police Department, per Politico.

"The Board welcomes Michael G. Sullivan to the position of Chief of the United States Capitol Police," Capitol Police said in a statement. "With over 30 years of law enforcement experience across three major U.S. cities, Michael Sullivan has focused on increasing transparency, improving departmental efficiency, and fostering strong relationships between officers, elected officials, and the community."
