A group of House Democrats on Wednesday sent a letter to President Donald Trump, demanding that he publicly promise Elon Musk will leave government service on schedule next month, due to his status as a "special government employee."

The designation means that Musk can only work for the federal government for 130 days per year, which will expire on May 30. The White House and Musk have both promised that the Tesla founder will leave service as scheduled.

The group of 77 lawmakers, led by Texas Democratic Rep. Greg Casar, indicated that the White House's and Musk's promises were not enough, claiming "repeated" law violations by the administration and the Tesla CEO, The Hill reported.

"We demand an immediate public statement from your administration making clear that Musk will resign and surrender all decision-making authority, as required by law, by May 30th,” they wrote. “In his short time in government, Elon Musk has done enormous harm to working Americans. While millions of Americans are suffering, Musk is continuing to enrich himself and break ethics laws.”

Musk has been tasked with helping the administration drastically reduce wasteful government spending, which has included audits of multiple federal agencies and the axing of billions of dollars in contracts and grants.

The billionaire recently stated that he believes his work with the department will be completed on time. But Vice President JD Vance said Musk will remain an adviser to him and Trump.
