Congressman Eric Burlison, R-Mo., said Tuesday that Democrats are using a potential government shutdown as a leveraging tool to get what they want despite them not being in the majority.

"They're trying to use the government shutdown as a leveraging tool against really what the American people voted for," Burlison said on the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show. "The American people voted [for] Republicans to be in control of the House, Senate and presidency."

President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced that he would not meet with congressional Democrats, citing what he called their "unserious and ridiculous demands" to avert a government shutdown.

"After reviewing the details of the unserious and ridiculous demands being made by the Minority Radical Left Democrats in return for their Votes to keep our thriving Country open, I have decided that no meeting with their Congressional Leaders could possibly be productive," he posted on TRUTH Social.

Burlison said some of the Democrats' demands included undoing everything in Trump's "big beautiful bill," and reversing actions regarding biological men in women's sports.

"Chuck Schumer lost and he's basically throwing a tantrum and shutting down the government in order to get his way and it's just not going to work," he said.

The House passed a short-term stopgap funding measure last week, but the Senate failed to follow suit. The measure would have kept the government funded through Nov. 21.
