California Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff has started a legal defense fund amid President Trump's threats to investigate him over the Russia collusion hoax.

“Senator Schiff Legal Defense Fund” paperwork was filed with the IRS on Thursday, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.

“It’s clear that Donald Trump and his MAGA allies will continue weaponizing the justice process to attack Senator Schiff for holding this corrupt administration accountable,” Schiff spokeswoman Marisol Samayoa said. “This fund will ensure he can fight back against these baseless smears while continuing to do his job.”

While he was a House member, Schiff led congressional investigations into Trump during his first term in the White House, served as the lead impeachment manager in the president's first impeachment, then on the committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Before leaving office, President Biden issued pre-emptive pardons to members of the Jan. 6 committee, in an attempt to protect them from the incoming Trump administration. At the time, Schiff said he did not want such a pardon, calling them “unwise” because they established a poor precedent for the rule of law.

The day before Schiff's legal defense fund paperwork was filed, Trump called for his administration to investigate the senator.

“I’m looking at Pam [Bondi] because I hope something’s going to be done about it,” Trump said regarding the Russia collusion investigation. “These people put our country at great danger. And Adam Schiff, it was all made up, it was a hoax.”

Former interim U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., Ed Martin, is investigating Schiff's real estate transactions.
