Houston Mayor John Whitmire said on Friday that he would limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities after the state flipped blue in the midterm elections.

Whitmire said the city would only go after immigrants who "pose a danger," the Associated Press reported.

He directed law enforcement to only contact U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement if the person stopped is arrested on a charge that is subject to jailing or if ICE issues an administrative warrant, which is an order signed by a senior ICE official indicating that the person is wanted by immigration officials.

The Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration in Houston sparked protests after one ICE officer fatally shot an illegal immigrant last summer.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office indicted an ICE agent who struck an illegal immigrant with a vehicle in a separate incident in Houston. The officer, Mario Alberto Morales, was indicted with the second-degree offense of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
