Defense Department removes Space Force commander in Greenland for undermining Trump agenda
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell shared a press release on X that confirmed Meyers' removal, stating leadership had lost "confidence in her ability to lead."
The Defense Department (DoD) on Thursday night announced it had relieved the leader of the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland from command, after she appeared to undermine President Donald Trump's agenda following Vice President JD Vance's visit to the base last month.
Colonel Susannah Meyers reportedly emailed the base after the visit, where she allegedly claimed that the vice president's comments did not reflect the views of the base.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell shared a press release on X that confirmed Meyers' removal, stating leadership had lost "confidence in her ability to lead." Colonel Shawn Lee has taken her place.
"Actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert President Trump's agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense," Parnell wrote in the post.
The move comes as the Trump administration hopes to acquire Greenland from Denmark, or otherwise gain control of the island nation. Vance claimed during his visit in March that Greenland would be better off “coming under the United States’ security umbrella than you have been under Denmark’s security umbrella."
