President Donald Trump is expected to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday after he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday about the prospect of peace in Ukraine.

A White house official confirmed plans for the talk with NewsNation.

Putin agreed with Trump to implement a limited ceasefire that would shield energy infrastructure and to begin negotiations on a maritime ceasefire to reopen Black Sea shipping. The Russian Ministry of Defense has accused the Ukrainians of targeting their oil fields within hours of the agreement.

Following the Trump-Putin call, the White House released a readout highlighting Russian interest in cooperating on security in the Middle East. Both parties also agreed to begin negotiations for a lasting peace.

“This conflict should never have started and should have been ended long ago with sincere and good faith peace efforts,” read the readout. “The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace. These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East.”
