5 adults dead, 2 children wounded after Philadelphia gunman in ballistic vest opens fire

Five adults were killed and two children sustained injuries, after a ballistic vest-clad gunman in Philadelphia opened fire on Monday night.

A suspect is in police custody, the New York Post reported. The shooting started around 8:30 p.m. in the Kingsessing area and lasted for roughly ten minutes, when authorities arrested a suspect.

"Our officers were able to apprehend the male in the rear alley of 1600 Frazier Street and when they did, this male was wearing a bulletproof vest with multiple magazines. He also had a (police) scanner, an AR-style rifle and a handgun," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw, according to ABC 6.

Authorities indicated that at least 50 gunshots had been fired at the scene when they arrived. Police heard additional gunfire while tending to the victims and raced toward the sounds, leading to the apprehension of the suspect.

The suspect is a 40-year-old male.
