One person dead, 11 injured in mass shooting during North Carolina house party
"We live in a great community and this is something that’s extremely rare," Catawba County Sheriff Don Brown said.
One person is dead and 11 others were injured in a mass shooting during a North Carolina house party.
Catawba County deputies initially responded to a home in the Mountain View community, about 60 miles north of Charlotte, around 11 p.m. on Saturday over a noise complaint, Queen City News reported.
“Our deputies responded to that complaint, addressed the controlling parties there at the residence about the noise and left a short time later,” said Maj. Aaron Turk of the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office.
Then, around 12:45 a.m. early Sunday morning, 911 calls were made regarding multiple people being shot at the residence. One of the 12 people injured in the shooting died and another is in critical condition, with the surviving 11 people hospitalized. Seven of them remained in the hospital on Monday.
Shawn Patrick Hood, 58, of Lenoir was the deceased victim. The age range of those shot was from 16 to 58.
A party was taking place at the house during the shooting, officials said.
“This is not a common act or an incident that occurs here in Catawba County,” Sheriff Don Brown said. “We live in a great community and this is something that’s extremely rare.”
There have been no arrests, but Hickory Police Department investigators and State Bureau of Investigation special agents are working to find a motive and identify any suspects. Around 70 people were interviewed by law enforcement on Sunday morning.
“We are going to work together tirelessly and diligently to identify the individuals responsible for this act,” Brown said.
Authorities believe there was more than one shooter as over 80 shots were fired at the scene from multiple weapons.
According to multiple unconfirmed reports, the shooting stemmed from a party of more than 100 people in high school. The county school district said, "We have no information at this time regarding whether any of our students were involved in the mass shooting incident."
