Dems reject union calls to end the shutdown
The AFGE represents more than 820,000 federal workers.
House Democrats on Tuesday rejected calls from a federal workers union to end the government shutdown by passing a continuing resolution.
Responding to the request of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., blamed Republicans for their unwillingness to negotiate, The Hill reported.
“We certainly understand where those union members are coming from and the difficult dilemma they have,” she said. “But this is the situation we’re in with a Republican Party that refuses to even come to the table. So we hear the union — we stand with them. And we implore our colleagues to come back to work.”
Clark's remarks followed a statement from AFGE President Everett Kelly urging Democrats to pass a clean CR.
“It’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today. No half measures, and no gamesmanship," Kelly said. The AFGE represents more than 820,000 federal workers.
